Tornado must wait on girls hoop coach

BUTLER TWP — Butler High School will be without an official head varsity girls basketball coach until at least Dec. 1.

Dorothea Epps resigned that position last week and the district is required to post the job opening for at least five days.

“We will have the job posted through Thursday,” Butler athletic director Bill Mylan said. “We plan to begin the interview process immediately after that.”

Jerry Markle, who was to be approved as an assistant coach prior to Epps’ resignation, is running the girls basketball practices until a head coach is named. Basketball practice officially began Monday.

Butler’s regular season opener is Dec. 4.

“While we can’t actually get a new coach approved until the next scheduled (Dec. 1) board meeting, we’re hoping to receive permission from the board to allow the person we recommend for the job to run practices until then,” Mylan said.

That discussion took place at Monday night’s school board meeting.
