Moniteau, St. Marys set for Round 2

Winners faces Karns City for District 9 football title

ST. MARYS — The Moniteau and St. Marys football teams have become well acquainted over the last two seasons.

The teams have met three times with St. Marys (7-3) winning two of those games — 35-6 in the regular season and 7-6 in the District 9 Class AA playoffs last season.

Moniteau (4-6) turned the tables on the Flying Dutch Oct. 30 with a 29-28 win.

Now, the two teams will meet again Friday for the fourth time in 13 months in the first round of the D-9 Class AA playoffs at St. Marys.

Kickoff is 7 p.m.

“We last played them two weeks ago,” said Monitea coach Wade Vogan said. “So it's still fresh. They know what we like to do and we know what they like to do. We both know what to expect.”

What St. Marys coach Anthony Defillipi expects is another bare-knuckle brawl against two gritty teams.

Defillipi said his team will also need to run the ball better than they did two weeks ago.

The Dutch were held to just 50 yards rushing on 27 carries.

“We have to get the running game going,” Defillipi said.

But St. Marys was able to throw the ball effectively in that game. Pat Schlimm was 9-of-18 passing for 250 yards and two touchdowns in that one-point loss.

“We were able to get some things working in the passing game that we have been able to build on,” Defillipi said.

St. Marys is hoping to get senior running back T.J. Hogan on the field for the first time this season.

Hogan rushed for 1,195 yards last season, but suffered a broken bone above his ankle before the season started and hasn't played a down in 2015.

“We don't know if he'll be able to play,” Defillipi said. “He's trying to come back. It's his senior year and he really wants to come back, but it's going to be a game-time decision. He definitely won't start.”

In his stead, St. Marys has used a committee of running backs led by junior Christian Steffan, who has rushed for 816 yards.

Junior Matt Marconi has gained 638 yards on the ground and senior Nathan Straub has added 453 yards rushing for the Dutch.

“I give all three of those guys credit,” Defillipi said.

When it comes to Moniteau's offense, it begins with quarterback Derek Boben.

The senior leads the Warriors in passing with 1,153 yards and seven touchdowns and in rushing with 799 yards and four scores.

Boben is even a force on defense at linebacker where he has racked up 134 tackles.

“We knew coming into the season Derek was going to give us 100 percent on both sides of the ball,” Vogan said. “He runs the game pretty well at quarterback. He's very smart. Running the ball, he's a bruiser and he'll put his shoulder down. Sometimes I have to hold my breath when he does that.”

Boben has teamed with Shonn Kline at linebacker for the Warriors to form quite the 1-2 punch.

Kline has 122 tackles this season.

“The heart of our defense is our linebackers,” Vogan said.

Vogan said despite the win against St. Marys earlier this season, all bets are off when it comes to this game.

“The records are out the window. Everyone is 0-0,” Vogan said. “I don't feel like we have an edge, but I feel like we can go up there and play with them.”
