Seneca ValleyþÄôs Emily Cekella sits on the field in awe after the RaiderþÄôs 3-2 overtime loss to Norwin at Mars High School Stadium on Tuesday, November 10, 2015.
SV girls bow out with overtime loss to unbeaten Norwin

ADAMS TWP — The rain was coming down pretty good, but Seneca Valley’s season fell harder.

Norwin senior Lexie Kolano rolled a shot past Raiders goalkeeper Jessica Pollaci 1:20 into the second overtime Tuesday night. The goal handed the unbeaten Knights a come-from-behind 3-2 win in a PIAA Class AAA first-round girls soccer game at the Mars Athletic Complex.

The victory marked Norwin’s third in as many tries against SV (17-5) this season. But this game was nothing like the first two, which were both shutouts.

“They came out and jumped on us,” Norwin coach Lauren Czapor-Karcher admitted. “They were aggressive from the start.

“I don’t know if it was the long bus ride to get here or what ... We looked a little sleepy out there.”

The Raiders scored twice in the game’s first 15 minutes — the first time Norwin (23-0) has allowed more than one goal in a game all season.

The Knights entered the game having scored 125 goals while allowing only four.

Cassidy Testa scored after a Lexus Lambert throw-in sailed across the goal crease. The ball was deflected back in front of the net and Testa knocked it past Knights goalkeeper Sam Wexell just six minutes into the contest.

Sarah Anderson got loose on a breakaway eight minutes later and scored from 20 yards out for a 2-0 lead.

Testa, Anderson and Megan Masjeski have all scored approximately 10 goals for the Raiders this season.

“That’s how our program has always been. We’re pretty balanced that way,” SV coach Dave Sylvester said before the game.

And Norwin’s always played with a lead.

“Our girls were still confident, but were getting frustrated,” Czapor-Karcher said. “We needed to calm down and get back to our game.”

Norwin was shut out in the first half and managed only two shots on goal. The Knights generated much more offense in the second 40 minutes.

Sophomore midfielder Emily Harrigan was sent in alone and rolled a shot into the far right corner of the net to pull Norwin within one with 32:31 remaining in regulation.

The Raiders’ lead looked like it was going to stand up and even be extended. With three minutes left, Anderson drilled a shot from the left corner that Wexell had to make a lunging stop on in front of the right post.

Norwin cleared the ball quickly and developed numbers going the other way. Harrigan took a pass from senior Micayla Livingston and deftly shot the ball into the right corner of the net with just 2:35 left to knot the game.

The assist was Livingston’s 25th of the season.

“We got lucky there,” Czapor-Karcher said. “We made a mistake in our own end and got away with it. That would have sealed it for them.”

Instead, the Knights received new life and carried the play in overtime — but had to escape defeat one more time.

With 25 seconds left in the first overtime, Wexell tried kicking the ball out of harm’s way in front of the Norwin net. Testa intercepted the ball and lofted a shot that barely sailed over the crossbar.

Kolano’s winning goal — her 23rd of the year — was set up by a pass from senior forward Abbey Tarosky. Kolano found herself alone in front of the net for an easy tally.

Norwin wound up with 10 shots on goal to Seneca Valley’s seven. The Raiders had five corner kicks on the night to Norwin’s one.

“It’s tough trying to beat a team three times, especially Seneca Valley,” Czapor-Karcher said. “That is an awfully good team.”

Sylvester could not be reached for comment after the game.
