Karns City wraps up perfect regular season

Gremlins rip Quad-A DuBois

KARNS CITY — The only thing that could stop Karns City was time.

The Gremlins scored a touchdown on each of their first nine possessions Friday night and were inside the DuBois Area 30 on their 10th when time expired on their 69-28 football victory at Diehl Stadium.

Karns City (10-0) wrapped up its first perfect regular season since 2007. Its 69 points were the most scored by a KC team since a 74-13 win over Union in 2003.

“I'm really proud of this effort tonight,” KC coach Ed Conto said. “We knew that (DuBois) team could score points in a hurry and we might have to match that.

“Our kids came out here prepared to do that.”

DuBois sophomore quarterback Matt Miller threw for 419 yards and four touchdowns on the night. He had 255 yards and three of those scores through the air in the first half.

But when Collin Dunmyre returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, KC had a 56-21 lead and the mercy clock was in effect.

“During halftime, we talked to the kids about the importance of putting together a scoring drive to begin the second half to get the mercy clock running,” Conto said. “Then Collin and the kickoff team took care of that themselves.”

Dunmyre wound up with 289 all-purpose yards — including 130 rushing and 74 receiving — and three touchdowns. Chandler Turner had 10 carries for 139 yards and four scores, all in the first half.

“I knew I wasn't going to get the ball much in the second half, it at all,” Turner said. “It didn't matter. We're all about team yardage.”

There was plenty of that. The Gremlins rushed for 370 yards as a team and threw for 113 more. KC threw only one pass in the first half and Evan Stitt caught an 8-yard TD pass from Jacob King in the fourth quarter to conclude Karns City's scoring.

“We planned to throw the ball a lot more tonight, but why do that if they're not stopping our run?,” Conto said.

The visiting Beavers (5-5) are headed to the Class AAAA playoffs despite allowing nearly 45 points per game defensively,

“We came into this game with four healthy linebackers and lost one of them in the first quarter,” DuBois coach Frank Varischetti said. “We had to move a linebacker to defensive end earlier in the year bacause our D-ends are all hurt.

“We've been fighting a ton of injuries. It's just been one of those years.”

Dunmyre lauded the play of the Gremlins' offensive line Friday night.

“Those guy open up gaps all the time,” he said. “We get six or eight yards downfield and we can make things happen.”

“They push us to get better and we push them to get better,” Turner said of the offensive line.

Dante Dawson, being heavily recruited by Division II schools, had 10 catches for 198 yards and three touchdowns for the Beavers.

“That team really throws the ball well,” Conto said. “I wanted to get the reserves in the game earlier, but DuBois can score points quickly and get back in games.

“The undefeated season means a lot to us. I told the kids before the game that it's so hard to do.”

Dunmyre appreciates the feat as well.

“It's another thing we can say we accomplished here,” he said.

Stitt had two interceptions, Maverick Kelsea and Jarod Stewart one each for KC. Stitt's first interception set up the Gremlins' first scoring drive of the night. Luke Salerno blocked a punt inside the Beavers' 5 to set up KC's second touchdown.

Miller has now thrown for more than 3,500 yards and 32 touchdowns on the year.

“Matt struggled tonight. He threw off his back foot a lot,” Varischetti said. “Four interceptions ... He only had seven all year coming into tonight.”

Karns City will have next weekend off before playing in the District 9 Class AA championship game.
