Knoch looking at must-win

JEFFERSON TWP — Knoch and Indiana are both down to their second quarterbacks — with the Knights going back to their first.

Making only his second start behind center since returning to football during this season, Knoch senior Cole Shinsky suffered a separated shoulder in last week's 21-0 loss at Mars and is likely out for the season.

That means Jake Herrit — who had shifted to receiver when Shinsky rejoined the team — returns to quarterback when the Knights (3-4, 2-4) host Indiana (2-5, 1-5) at 7 p.m. Friday.

“I feel badly for what happened to Cole. He's such an intense competitor,” Knoch coach Mike King said. “But so is Jake. Both of those guys were on our state championship baseball team last spring.

“You can't win a state title without having a bunch of guys willing to go the extra mile in helping their team. Both of these kids are like that.”

The Little Indians lost quarterback Mark Zilinskas to injury earlier in the season. His replacement, Luke Thomas, has thrown for 350 yards and three touchdowns.

Dylan Stapleton leads the Indians with 23 catches for 307 yards while Ryan Huff has 19 catches for 367. Connor Tshudy has rushed for 464 yards and eight scores.

Indiana has won two of its last three since an 0-4 start. The Indians beat Knoch 28-25 and 28-7 the past two years.

“They will be a tough challenge for us,” King said. “Every game is a must-win to me and wins are hard to earn in this conference.

“Our backs are to the wall now. If we want to get into the playoffs, we need to play our best football and win.”

Mac Christy leads the Knights' ground game with 367 yards and four touchdowns. Tight end Brennan McTighe has 18 catches for 293 yards.

“We got down close three times against Mars and couldn't get in,” King said. “Part of that was good defense by them. Part of it was we had breakdowns, made mistakes here and there and couldn't finish.

“We've played well at home this year, except for the Hampton game (a 28-0 loss). Hopefully, we'll put one together Friday.”

Indiana coach Mark Zilinskas could not be reached for comment.
