Man, 44, accused of rape, assault

Alleged victim is mentally disabled

CLAY TWP — A township man is accused of raping his friend’s mentally disabled daughter while the father was away picking up another child at a hospital.

Gary W. Plunkard, 44, was arrested Friday on charges of rape, rape of a mentally disabled person, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a mentally disabled person, indecent assault, and indecent assault of a mentally disabled person.

He is in Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail.

Police said Plunkard was at the Muddy Creek Drive home of the alleged victim’s adoptive father on Aug. 28, helping him install a new set of stairs and a sidewalk on the property.

The 22-year-old victim, as well as three of her siblings, also were home at the time.

The father of the victim left at some point during the evening after receiving a call from his wife, who was at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh with the couple’s 16-year-old daughter, according to a criminal complaint filed against Plunkard.

The wife asked the father to pick up the daughter and take her home.

Plunkard stayed at the home to continue working on the stairs after the father left.

At some point later in the evening, Plunkard went to his nearby home to get beer and his dog before returning to the home of the victim.

Plunkard sat at a fire with his friend’s children, offering the victim and her sisters, ages 22 and 14, beer. Plunkard went to his home a second time to get four jacketed rifle bullets, a stuffed deer head and a Halloween skull decoration before returning to the victim’s residence again.

The victim’s 12-year-old brother went to bed at about 11:30 p.m. and the victim’s sisters did as well by 1 a.m., leaving Plunkard alone at the fire with the victim, who he allegedly encouraged to keep drinking.

Sometime after 1 a.m. Plunkard convinced the victim to go into a goat pen to look for a goat that he said had gotten out, documents said.

While in the pen, Plunkard allegedly forced the victim to perform a sex act and attempted to have intercourse with her. After the assault, Plunkard allegedly told the victim not to tell anyone.

Plunkard on Aug. 31 was questioned by police and admitted to the alleged acts, with the exception of offering the 14-year-old girl alcohol and attempting to have intercourse with the victim.

He told police he could not have intercourse with the victim, stating “I couldn’t because I love my wife and kids,” according to his criminal complaint.

Plunkard also was charged with misdemeanor counts of indecent assault, corruption of minors and furnishing liquor to a minor.
