Ellwood City man seriously hurt after crashing car into building

JACKSON TWP — An Ellwood City man was seriously injured when his car crashed into a building along Perry Highway early this morning.

Jackson Township police said the 32-year-old man, whose name was not yet released, was driving northbound when, at about 3:23 a.m., he lost control of his car and crashed into USA Coatings at 22311 Perry Highway.

Harmony Fire District volunteer firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle.

The man suffered serious injuries and was flown by a STAT MedEvac helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Police believe the man was driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his 2013 Subaru Legacy. The car crossed both southbound lanes and slid across the parking lot of the business before crashing into the structure.

The collision caused heavy damage to the vehicle and substantial damage to the building, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.

John Trabert, owner of the company, said the car damaged a large garage door, exterior concrete blocks and several pieces of equipment, including a crane, inside the garage.

“I'd estimate it around $100,000 in damage,” Trabert said.

No one was inside the building at the time of the accident.

The company does sandblasting, structural painting and powder coating work.

Trabert said he wouldn't be able to open for business today due to the damage.
