Man accused of stealing dog

He's charged with felony trespass

Butler police Tuesday arrested a man on charges he broke into an ex-girlfriend’s house and stole a dog.

The suspect, Charles H. Davies III, 24, of Butler, was seen leaving the house “carrying the dog on his shoulders,” a witness told police, according to court documents.

Davies, who is charged with felony trespass, is in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.

Police about 7:20 p.m. got a call for a reported animal theft at a home in the 800 block of Wood Street.

The caller, Jessica Bowser, told officers Davies, her former boyfriend, had carried off the canine from her house. She said the dog was in the basement when she left her locked home.

Bowser said a friend told her she had seen Davies leave the house with the dog, according to a police affidavit.

In turn, Bowser went to Davies’ house on Mercer Street, where she saw the canine. That’s when she called authorities.

Officers spoke to Davies at his house. He claimed he and Bowser own the dog jointly. He also told police the dog was in Bowser’s backyard when he fetched it.

Police acknowledged they did not charge Davies with theft because they are unsure who owns the dog.

Officers, nevertheless, returned the dog to Bowser.
