5 new stores, restaurant planned

Businesses coming to Butler Crossing

BUTLER TWP — New stores are coming to the Butler Crossing shopping center, with a plan to add five retailers and a restaurant.

The township planning commission gave its approval Tuesday night to the project, which will construct a building with five storefronts and one restaurant space on a vacant, 2.6-acre lot behind Applebee’s restaurant.

Zoning officer Jessie Hines said Tuesday’s vote on the plan by Cedarwood Development was a procedural matter on a project that township officials have known about for some time.

“This is basically the build-out that was planned,” he said.

There was no word Tuesday on what the new shops might include. A Cedarwood representative said negotiations with prospective tenants are under way.

The project still has a final hurdle to clear — approval by the township commissioners — before construction can begin.

Hines said the work could start in either late winter or early spring.

The new development comes as work on another township shopping center, the Greenway Plaza on New Castle Road near Route 422, proceeds as expected, Hines said.

That project by developer United Growth will have a Dick’s Sporting Goods, a Mattress Firm store and a Starbucks coffee shop at the 5.8-acre site.

Construction of the Dick’s building began this year, and Hines said contractors have completed work on the walls and floors, with roof construction under way.

The township also has received the developer’s application for construction of the Mattress Firm building which is a sign that the plaza’s construction is proceeding on pace, said Hines.

Developers said in July they hoped to have the Dick’s open by the end of 2015, with the additional shops done by early 2016.

“It’s going just as planned,” Hines said.
