Eye-opening apples

Mike Spohn holds giant apples that he grows at his house on Herman Road in Summit Township.

Spohn, who has lived there his whole life, estimates that the tree is about 100 years old and is one of a kind.

Years ago, the family had the apples inspected by a lab at Penn State University, which could not determine what type or variety of apple they are. The tree still produced about a bushel of apples even though it has been gradually hollowing out over the years.
