Theater enriches us

I congratulate the Butler Little Theatre on a very successful 75 years of operation that has enriched the community with its staging of works that concretize important ideas.

As an audience member at several notable performances including “Proof” and “The Book of Liz,” I have been impressed with BLT’s obvious commitment to perform significant plays that similar organizations would find, for many reasons, too daunting.

The fact that “Inherit the Wind” — an unrivaled portrayal of the unjust hostility against Darwin that unfortunately persists to this day — was staged in the 1960s (and slated for the current season) is an example of the value BLT provides to the community by challenging them to think.

Indeed, the fact that BLT’s first production was philosopher-novelist’s Ayn Rand’s “The Night of January 16th,” an innovative play which literally requires audience members to serve as jury members whose verdict determines which of two different endings of the play will be performed, is emblematic of an approach to art that Butler, and many other communities, need more of.
