Fire on Friday destroys garage, damages house

CLAY TWP — A garage and several vehicles were destroyed by a fire Friday afternoon on Muddy Creek Drive.

Firefighters responded to the 200-block home of Bruce Watson just after 1 p.m. and found the blaze fully involved.

“The gentleman said he got home, parked his (vehicle) in the garage then went inside to get something to eat,” said Mike Pflugh, assistant chief of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department. “A little while later he heard a noise outside and saw his garage was on fire.”

The fire was just beginning to spread to Watson's single-story home when firefighters arrived.

“We doused the side of the home to cool it off before moving on to the garage,” Pflugh said.

The home suffered damage to its exterior but is livable, Pflugh said.

However, the garage and its contents were destroyed, including a 2011 Subaru, a 1973 Jeep, three motorcycles, an all-terrain vehicle and lawn mowers.

“It's where he kept his toys,” said a family member of Watson's who did not want to be identified.

No one was injured in the blaze. The structure is insured.

Pflugh estimated at least $75,000 worth of damage to the garage and its contents.

The 1973 Jeep Wrangler was a prized possession with only 26,000 miles on it. He used it mainly to plow his driveway.

The cause of the fire is not determined.

Five volunteer fire departments assisted. All were cleared by 3 p.m.
