SV volleyball nets sweep of Butler

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley senior Madison Chapman kept rocketing the volleyball past the Butler girls team Tuesday night at William Paul Gymnasium.

Tight serves landed tight against the net, toward the backline and even ones in the middle found their way to the ground during the third set of the Raiders' 25-13, 25-18, 25-5 Section 3-AAA win.

By the time Chapman was done, she recorded 13 service points, including five aces, as the Raiders ran away with the third set.

“I love serving,” Chapman said. “I like to get hard serves and I was serving for aces at end of the volley. It was cool.”

That was the kind of consistency Seneca Valley assistant coach Brett Poirier felt the Raiders needed to show.

Poirier, who was filling in because head coach Karen Martini was out with an illness, said he thought Seneca Valley had struggled with consistency recently.

The Raiders displayed balance throughout the evening, having nine players register at least one kill.

“I wanted to see consistency with the starters,” Poirier said. “From start to finish, they showed me that tonight. They came out, played strong and we got leads and I started filling people in.”

Tatum Poirier and Maria Alfano started the Raiders off with consecutive kills to open the first set.

It was part of a 4-1 run for Seneca Valley and the Raiders never trailed.

“I think that tonight was much better than the past nights we've had,” said Tautum Poirier, who finished with a team-high seven kills. “We've definitely improved our consistency and our sets are where they need to be.”

Butler, which is now 0-6 in section, struggled to get into its offense. Emily Archer and Mandy Lawrence led the Golden Tornado with three kills apiece.

In the second set, Butler cut a 16-8 lead down to 16-12 following a Seneca Valley attack error.

The Golden Tornado wouldn't get any closer, as Seneca Valley picked up two quick points on Butler attack errors.

Golden Tornado coach Dan Mountain wants to see his team continue to progress.

“I'm hoping to see this team look for steady improvement,” Mountain said. “They've come a long way from where they were in the summer. We just need to steadily improve in some of the closer matches they've had and work hard to win the close matches the second time around.”

Chapman's run started after Butler's Caitlyn Martin registered a kill to cut the Raiders' third-set lead to 3-1.

Seneca Valley got the serve back and before Butler got the serve back, Chapman extended the lead to 17-1.

“She's done it a couple years now and she's probably our best server,” Brett Poirier said. “She can get five points every time she serves.”

Mario Alfano also registered six kills for the Raiders, who improved to 5-1 in section. Chapman and the Raiders feels the Raiders have found their groove.

“I think both the setters have been working on setting the ball faster and tighter and we connected better,” Chapman said.
