Knights take tough road loss

Lose lead in 4th quarter of 17-13 defeat at Gateway

MONROEVILLE — It was a tale of two halves when Knoch and Gateway squared off Friday night.

The visiting Knights led until midway through the fourth quarter, when Gateway quarterback Brady Walker threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Harold Denson.

That touchdown ended up being the game-winner for the Gators, who scored a 17-13 Greater Allegheny Conference win.

The Knights (2-2, 1-2) didn’t make it easy on Gateway.

Knoch forced five turnovers, including an interception, two fumbles and two muffed punt returns. The interception and one fumble came in the first half, which both led to touchdowns for the Knights.

“There was some adversity facing us, and our players came back from a bad first half,” Gateway coach Tom Nola said. “I’m proud of them and the way they did come back.”

The Knights controlled the game heading into halftime with a 13-3 lead. However, the tempo shifted in Gateway’s favor midway through the third quarter when Walker threw a 90-yard touchdown pass to Jaquan Brisker.

“He (Walker) ran and threw the ball well in the second half, and played an overall really good game,” Nola said. “In the second half, he was right on target, ran the ball well and had a really good half.”

Knoch’s offense fell apart in the second half after capitalizing multiple times in the first, and was unable to score.

“Gateway hung in there and didn’t give up. It’s just the way it goes,” Knoch coach Mike King said. “We did have momentum, and I thought we played well enough to win. It just didn’t happen.”

The Knights were only able to post a total of 160 yards of offense, with 112 yards from quarterback Jake Herrit.

Herrit threw one touchdown pass to Brennan McTighe, but was unable to do anything else.

Knoch’s running game failed to have an impact with only 48 yards on 26 carries.

“We’ve got to get people in the right positions and take care of personnel issues and give them a lot of reps,” King said.

On the other side, Gateway’s offense had an extremely productive night aside from the five turnovers. The Gators had 478 total yards, with 198 rushing and 280 passing.

Gateway continued to march down the field, gaining first down after first down, but that was mostly negated by the turnovers.
