'Man of Steel' helps Mars grind out win

Junior RB rushes for 220 yards

GREESBURG — Isaiah Johnson was superman for Mars football team Friday night.

He had the shirt — and the numbers — to prove it.

Wearing a black “Superman” shirt under his pads and jersey, Johnson was a man of steel, rushing for 220 yards on 24 carries to help the Planets to a 28-13 win over Greensburg Salem at Offut Field Friday night.

“I just ran hard and followed my blocks,” Johnson said. “It was just one of those grind-it-out kind of nights. I just had to keep my head down and keep going.”

Mars (3-1) needed every yard from Johnson on a night when it made a slew of mistakes.

The Planets committed seven offensive holding/illegal block in the back penalties, fumbled four times and had a punt blocked that led to a Greensburg Salem touchdown.

It also struggled to get stops on defense as the Lions (0-4) converted 7-of-13 third downs.

Mars had just seven first downs total.

“We're obviously not real pleased with the performance we put on tonight,” said Mars coach Scott Heinauer. “Traditionally, that's not Mars football.

“We have to play football better than that,” Heinauer added, “or we're not going to win another game.”

Greensburg Salem took the opening kickoff and marched 71 yards on 16 plays and chewed up 8:30 off the clock, but missed a 29-yard field goal.

After a Mars three-and-out, Caleb Brake's punt was blocked, setting the Lions up at the Mars 1.

Two plays later, Connor Forkey plowed his way into the end zone on a quarterback sneak and Greensburg Salem had a 7-0 lead.

It didn't last long.

On Mars' ensuing possession, Johnson burst up the middle on a trap play and raced 85 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at 7-7.

“That was a huge play, a big momentum shift,” Johnson said. “It was a great play call.”

Mars took a 21-7 lead at the half on the strength of two touchdown passes from Sam Morrissey to tight end John Castello.

The first was a perfectly thrown post pattern for a 35-yard touchdown. The second was a lofted fade pass to the right corner of the end zone for a 24-yard score.

And it looked as if Mars was imposing its will.

But that waned in the second half.

Greensburg Salem was efficient on offense, mixing short passes with its running game, and drove 62 yards for a touchdown, capped by a 22-yard TD strike from Forkey to Cameron Trout, to cut the Mars lead to 21-13.

Mars, though, answered on a short drive aided by a long kickoff return by Eli Brooks and two personal foul penalties on Greensburg Salem.

Morrissey plunged in from the 1 to give Mars a 28-13 lead in the third quarter that held up.

Mars was in no mood to celebrate the sloppy victory, however.

“We have a lot to work on heading into next week,” Johnson said. “There were a lot of mistakes and we need to fix them. It's a win, but we feel we could have played better.”
