Golfers join WPIAL semi's

Knoch's Christian Evanchec and Jimmy Ellis, along with Mars' Bailey Trzeciak, hit the target score at the WPIAL Section 3-AAA golf qualifier to reach the semifinals.

Trzeciak and Evanchec both shot 11-over par 81s at the Fox Chapel Golf Course, while Ellis shot an 82.

Seneca Valley 187, Pine-Richland 203 — Mark McNulty fired a 35 at Cranberry Highlands to lead the Raiders (7-3).

Four of the five Seneca Valley golfers shot under 40.

Freeport 189, Valley 282 — Justin Hildebrand and Brendan Aber shot 1-under par 35s to help the Yellowjackets shoot a school record score and earn a section win at Buffalo Golf Course.

Hildebrand recorded an eagle and birdie for Freeport (13-2, 10-0).

Valley (282): Devin Raynovich 45, Nick Vulcini 54, Jay Jackson 56, Chris O'Sullivan 58, Dmirti Wolfe 69.

Freeport (189): Hildebrand 35, Aber 35, Mickey Frazetta 39, Denny Wuyscik 39, Nick Helman 41.

Slippery Rock 152, Grove City 182 — Collin Hyatt shot a 35 at Oakview Golf Club as the Rockets shot their lowest score in a nine-hole match in school history in a win over the Eagles.

Sam Isacco also shot a 37 for Slippery Rock..

Shaler 207, Butler 209 — Nic Leone shot a team-high 37 to lead the Golden Tornado in a section loss at Butler Country Club.

Shaler (207): Tanner Grzegorczyk 36, Mike Pearson 38, John Romanowski 41, Bryce Fedak 46, Will Nichols 46.

Butler (209): Leone 37, Kaden Rock 39, Nick Huff 41, Brock Hinton 46, Gage Terwilliger 46.

Hampton 189, Knoch 214 — Christian Evanchec led the Knights with a 40 in this section loss. Knoch fell to 5-9 overall, 3-7 in section.

Knoch (214): Evanchec 40, Jimmy Ellis 43, Ben Thoma 43, Logan Hickey 43, Aiden Albert 45.

Hampton (189): Ben Huber 35, Marissa Balish 36, Grant Muir 36, Andy Gross 40, Justin Griffith 42.

Girls golf

Freeport's Audrey Dougherty placed second at the WPIAL girls individual section qualifier with an 82 at Butler's Woodside Golf Course.

Boys soccer

Mario Borino recorded his second hat trick of the year to help Freeport beat Highlands 8-1 at home a Section 2-AA matchup.

Kevin Lynch (twice) and Patrick McNulty also scored for the Yellowjackets (4-4, 3-3).

Slippery Rock 2, Hickory 0 — Ryan Purvis scored both goals to help the Rockets pick up an in-region win.

Jackson Kerchis made three saves to pick up the shutout for the Rockets (4-2, 2-0).

Karns City 10, Keystone 0 — Spenser Myers scored four goals to lead the Gremlins (8-0).

Noah Pollock and Jace Ebbitt each added a pair of goals for Karns City.

Volleyball

Morgan Ruppersberger recorded 18 kills and 12 service points to help Freeport sweep Burrell 25-8, 25-15, 25-13 in a section match.

Zoe Pawlak also finished with 24 service points and three aces for the Yellowjackets (5-0, 5-0). Maggie Ward handed out 51 assists and Katie Zingaro had six kills for Freeport.

A-C Valley 3, Slippery Rock 0 — Kiersten Rothen had 14 digs, 14 assists and 10 serving points as the Falcons remained undefeated with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-17 win.

Halee Wetzel added 12 kills and 12 digs, Katie Stumpner 14 points, 19 digs and six kills and Josey Terwilliger eight points, 13 digs, nine kills and five blocks for the Falcons (7-0).

Katie McClymonds had 21 digs to pace Slippery Rock (2-3).

Knoch 3, Obama Academy 1 — Sarah Armahizer had 12 kills and Abby Pospisil added nine kills and 19 service points in a 25-17, 25-18, 20-25, 25-23 win.

Pine-Richland 3, Butler 1 — Emily Archer had seven kills in a losing cause to lead the Golden Tornado. Erin Fullerton, Caitlin Martin, Maria Lucas and Alexis Schmieder had six kills each.

Union 3, Karns City 2 — Brooke Moore had 23 service points, but the Gremlins fell to the Damsels 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 14-25, 10-15.

Brody Whited had 10 kills for KC, while Mackenzie Craig added 11 assists.

Grove City 3, Wilmington 1 — Hannah Santom had 22 assists and six kills as the Eagles downed the greyhounds 22-25, 25-14, 25-13, 15-21.

Grove City (4-2) also received nine kills and seven digs from Bailey Risch and six kills, nine digs, 10 serving points and nine assists from Macguire Gubba.

The Eagles junior varsity team also won 24-26, 25-11, 15-8.

Clarion 3, Moniteau 0 — The Warriors lost by scores of 25-12, 25-14, 25-21. No other details were given.
