An injury kept Freeport's Mickey Frazetta out for most of the 2014 high school golf season.

Now healthy, the senior is playing a lot .... and winning.

Frazetta finished first at the Section 1-AA Qualifier on Tuesday, carding a 76 at Lenape Heights Golf Course. He became the first Freeport boy to win a section title since Richard Vandruff in 2012.

“Last year was very frustrating and I missed playing a lot,” said Frazetta, who broke the middle finger on his right hand last year. “I played in some tournaments over the summer to get back into it. I was just looking to advance today. Winning was a bonus.”

Frazetta, who is averaging 39.5 in the Yellowjackets' matches this season, is very familiar with Lenape Heights, but was disappointed with his first shot of the day.

“The first hole is straight out and uphill with trees on either side,” he said. “I had the first-hole jitters and my tee shot went into the trees on the right side, but I still had a clear look at the green and ended up with par.

“After that first hole, the jitters left me and I sank a ton of putts. I was able to get up and down eight times.”

Freeport coach Joe Sprumont sees improvement in Frazetta's play, despite the latter's lost junior campaign.

“The main thing is his consistency in all aspects of his game,” Sprumont said. “He has worked as hard as anybody. Every day, it seems like he's at the range or on the course.”

Frazetta will compete in the WPIAL Class AA finals Oct. 1 at Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley. He will be joined by teammate Denny Wuyscik, who tied for second Tuesday with an 81.

Both golfers plan to play a practice round at the course.

“Those guys have been playing really well the last two or three weeks,” Sprumont said. “They just need to go out and keep doing what they've been doing.”
