Tornado seeking 2 new coaches

Positions open in softball, lacrosse

BUTLER TWP — Butler High School will soon be seeking a pair of varsity head coaches for the spring sports season.

Golden Tornado girls softball coach Shauna Troup is leaving the program to take over the softball reins at the newly consolidated Armstrong High School.

“I still have not received the paperwork to make Shauna's resignation official ... but, yes, she is resigning,” Butler athletic director Bill Mylan said.

Troup was recently announced as Armstrong's hire for softball. She is from Armstrong County and is a graduate of Elderton High School.

Butler was 14-17 overall in two seasons under Troup, including 11-15 in section play. The Tornado did not reach the WPIAL playoffs in either of her two seasons at the helm.

Justin Karam's resignation as Butler's boys lacrosse coach was announced at Monday's school board meeting. The Tornado were 4-16 overall in Karam's lone season as coach — winless in division play — but had a significantly young team.

Butler did win its final three games last spring.

“We will be posting both of those openings and I'd love to have new coaches in place by the beginning of the new year,” Mylan said. “Open gyms and training for those spring sports begins in January.

“We will have to be particularly diligent in finding a lacrosse coach. That is still a relatively new varsity sport here and it can be difficult finding qualified coaches who know the game.”

While the Tornado have enjoyed recent playoff success in lacrosse, the girls softball program has not reached the WPIAL playoffs since 2009 and has endured five successive losing seasons.
