Rape charge dropped in Slippery Rock Twp case

SLIPPERY ROCK — Felony sex assault charges against a Pittsburgh man were dropped Wednesday in a deal that saw him waive a preliminary hearing on a remaining misdemeanor.

Samuel K. Njuguna, 25, was facing one felony charge each of rape and aggravated indecent assault, as well as a misdemeanor charge of indecent assault, after state police accused him of raping a woman he met on a dating website.

Wednesday’s agreement between Russ Karl, Butler County Assistant District Attorney, and Njugna’s attorney, public defender Joe Smith, also included District Judge Bill Fagley reducing Njugna’s bond from $75,000 monetary to $25,000 surety bond.

Njuguna, who has been at Butler County Prison since his arrest in late August, did not post bond Wednesday.

State police charged Njugna, who is from Nigeria and in the United States on a student visa while attending La Roche College in Pittsburgh, after a Slippery Rock Township woman said he raped her on Aug. 28 after the two met on the OKCupid website and agreed to meet up at her apartment.

According to court documents, the woman told police that she told Njugna she did not want to have sex before the two went into her apartment, where they watched television and had a consensual sex act.

But the woman said Njugna then became “aggressive,” held her arms and raped her.

Karl refused to comment on the deal or the status of the case.

Njuguna now faces a single misdemeanor charge of indecent assault.
