SV girls soccer streak snapped

JACKSON TWP -- Having a day off, Seneca Valley girls soccer coach Dave Sylvester hopes, will provide his team with time to reflect and rededicate.

The Raiders' typically potent offensive machine was out of sorts Saturday at NexTier Stadium, failing to generate a goal in a 2-0 Section 2-AAA loss to Pine-Richland. It snapped a 20-game section winning streak that dated back to 2013 for the two-time defending WPIAL champions.

Seneca Valley (2-1, 1-1) was also shut out for the first time since losing to Spring-Ford in the 2013 PIAA semifinals, a streak of 26 games. The Raiders scored six goals in their first two games this season.

“I told them at halftime, this is a reflection of how we have been mentally preparing,” Sylvester said. “What we've been doing, the attitude we've been taking in practice.

“You think you're going to show up and it's going to take care of itself. It's not going to happen anymore. Teams are sick of you. If you aren't ready to play, this is going to be the result.”

The Rams (2-0-1, 1-0) took the lead with hustle. Kylie Mauppelli forced a turnover within 20 yards of the Raiders' goal and dribbled toward the net. She released a shot that Seneca Valley junior goaltender Delaney Lisco got a piece of before it bounced into the net with 34 minutes, 25 seconds left in the first half.

That was the type of effort Pine-Richland coach Jodi Chmielewski wanted to see.

“We felt like we needed to outwork them in the middle of the field,” Chmielewski said. “That was really our goal because they have phenomenal players in the middle of the field.”

Mauppelli nearly scored again in the 11th minute. Her Pine-Richland teammate Amanda Kalin hit a shot that rattled off the far-left post and landed at Mauppelli's feet. Mauppelli's follow-up shot hit the crossbar.

Seneca Valley, which earned seven corner kicks, had five corner kick opportunities in the last 17 minutes of the first half. The Raiders' best scoring chance came off a Caroline Miller header that was deflected away by a Pine-Richland defender.

The Rams out-shot the Raiders 16-12, including a 7-6 edge in shots goal.

“I think they outplayed us,” Sylvester said. “I thought they wanted it more than we did. I thought our fundamental soccer was awful. Our shape, our positioning, our first touches and our positioning.”

Cassidy Testa nearly tied the game three minutes into the second half when she launched a shot that Pine-Richland goalie Ingrida Ivaska made a sprawling save on. Seneca Valley had several more efforts that sailed over the crossbar.

Mauppelli put the game away when she took a pass from Kalin and hit a shot past Lisco with 7:22 remaining.

“(Mauppelli) was frustrated with that sitter that she could have scored to make it 2-0 in the first half,” Chmielewski said. “When you get ticked and you're a competitive player, that gave her the drive to score the second goal.”
