Short-handed Mars soccer wins in OT

Andrew Deifenbacher provided the relief a short-handed Mars boys soccer team needed Saturday at the Mars Athletic Complex.

His goal in the first overtime gave the Planets a 2-1 win in their season opener.

Mars (1-0) played down a man after a player drew a red card midway through the second half.

The Talbots forced overtime with a goal with two minutes remaining in the second half. Caleb Brake scored the first goal for Mars on an assist from Andrew Dominjanni.

Freeport 4, Armstrong 2 — A hat trick from Mario Borino helped the Yellowjackets steal a win in the first game in River Hawks' history.

Tanner Hoscheid also scored for Freeport (1-0).

Obama Academy 2, Knoch 0 — The Eagles blanked the Knights (0-1-1) at the Shaler Tournament.

Seneca Valley delayed —The Raiders game against Chartiers Valley was postponed due to lightning after 12 minutes of play.

A makeup date was unavailable.

Girls soccerTori Kopchak picked up a hat trick, helping Mars open the season with a 5-0 non-section home win over Hampton.Judy Kahn and Maggie Wilson also added goals for the Planets (1-0).Villa Maria 3, Butler 1 — The Golden Tornado dropped this non-section game Saturday in Erie.Seneca Valley delayed — The Raiders game against Penn-Trafford was postponed due to weather. A makeup date was not announced.

FootballWilmington built a 10-point, first-half lead and sustained the lead until the end, scoring a 38-28 non-region win over Grove City Saturday at home.The game was delayed after being suspended Friday with the Greyhounds ahead 14-7.Nick Davies pulled Grove City within 24-21 in the third quarter when he caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Kameron Patterson.Wilmington responded with two scores to put the game out of reach.Patterson passed for 222 yards and Davies finished with a game-high 97 yards receiving.Keystone 38, Union 18 — Panthers running back Jake Weaver ran for 343 yards to help Keystone score a KSAC Small Division win on the road.Dugan Gallagher rushed for 73 yards for the Golden Knights and collected two rushing touchdowns. Union quarterback Cole Morris also scored and finished with 55 rushing yards.Clarion 46, A-C Valley 0 — The Falcons kept the Bobcats off the board in the first half, but couldn't do enough to prevent a KSAC Small Division loss.It was the 23rd straight loss for A-C Valley, which limited Clarion to 224 yards of total offense.

VolleyballThe A-C Valley girls volleyball team won its season-opening tournament by beating Cranberry 25-10, 25-8 in the finals.The Falcons beat Johnsonburg 25-18 in the semifinals.
