Mars enjoys home turf vs. Indiana

ADAMS TWP — When it comes to its rivalry with Indiana, the Mars football team has found its home confines to be very friendly.

The Planets will try to keep it that way Friday night in a Greater Allegheny Conference matchup.

Since Mars was bumped up to Class AAA in 2008, the Planets are 4-3 against the Indians, including a perfect 3-0 mark at the Mars Athletic Complex, which will host the 2015 opener.

“We've never beaten those guys at their place,” said veteran Indiana coach Mark Zilinskas. “Our kids are excited about this opportunity.”

“When we first started playing in Triple-A, we didn't know anything about Indiana,” said Mars coach Scott Heinauer. “But a lot of football players on both teams also play basketball. The rivalry has heated up in basketball and has carried over into football.”

The Indians graduated star wide receiver Riley Stapleton, who amassed 1,014 yards and seven touchdowns in 2014. But the offense's cupboard is far from bare.

Senior quarterback Jacob Zilinskas returns after throwing for 1,617 yards and running for 651 more in 2014, which also included 37 combined touchdowns between passing and rushing in the team's flexbone scheme. He helped the Indians reach the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals, where they fell to eventual champion Central Valley.

“He started three games his sophomore year and has been the starter for us ever since,” said Coach Zilinskas of his son. “He's a dual threat and a smart player.”

Riley Stapleton's younger brother, Dylan, is primed to be the top target in the passing game. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound senior caught 35 passes for more than 500 yards a year ago.

Indiana defeated visiting Mars last year 29-26, with Jacob Zilinskas passing for 237 yards. But Coach Zilinskas knows the victory was due in large part to a dose of harsh luck for the Planets. Mars led 19-0 late in the first half, but lost senior fullback Josh Schultheis to a knee injury, prompting the Indians' comeback.

“We were fortunate to win that one,” admitted Zilinskas. “We won last year by airing it out for the most part. I feel we have a more balanced team this time.”

Mars will debut junior Isaiah Johnson at fullback. He contributed 631 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns as a wingback last year.

“He runs low to the ground and is not a high-stepper,” said Heinauer. “His cutting ability reminds me a little of Brad (Mueller, Class of 2003), but I still need to see him in a game at fullback.”

The Planets' offensive line will be without junior left guard Hunter Cooper, a returning starter who is out with an undisclosed injury. Heinauer said he should be back for Week 2 against Armstrong.
