Dog injured in house fire

Blaze contained to living room

BUTLER TWP — A black Lab dog was injured this morning when a house caught on fire on Grandview Boulevard.

Patty Kenaan of Butler Township said she stopped by her son’s home at 235 Grandview Blvd. about 6:45 a.m. to take the dog for a walk.

“I come every morning to let the dog out,” she said. “When I opened the door, black smoke came out and I saw flames in the living room.”

The black Lab and a cat were in the home at the time. James Kenaan had left for work earlier.

Firefighters responded and put out the blaze in about 10 minutes, said Michael Schmidt, fire chief of the South Butler Volunteer Fire Department.

“After we had the fire out, we found the dog laying on the kitchen floor,” Schmidt said.

The chief said the dog was breathing but was lethargic. The animal was tended to at the scene for about half an hour then taken to the Butler Veterinary Associates and Emergency Center on Route 8.

Schmidt said he was not sure of the dog’s condition.

The cat was still missing at 8 a.m.

Fire Marshall Larry Christie was called to the scene to investigate the fire.

Schmidt said it appeared to be an electrical fire. He did not have an estimate on the value of the damage to the home, but said it was contained to the living room.

“The home is certainly salvable,” the chief said.

The American Red Cross was called to assist Kenaan, Schmidt said.

Firefighters from Butler Fire District 3, Mercer Road and Penn Township assisted as did Butler Ambulance.
