House damaged, dog hurt in early morning fire

BUTLER TWP — A black lab dog was injured this morning when a house caught on fire on Grandview Boulevard.

Patty Kenaan of Butler Township said she stopped by her son’s home at 235 Grandview Boulevard about 6:45 a.m. to take the dog for a walk.

“I come every morning to let the dog out,” she said. “When I opened the door, black smoke came out and I saw flames in the living room.”

The black lab and a cat were in the home at the time. James Kenaan had left for work earlier.

Firefighters put out the blaze in about 10 minutes, said Michael Schmidt, fire chief of the South Butler Volunteer Fire Department.

“After we had the fire out, we found the dog laying on the kitchen floor,” Schmidt said.

The chief said the dog was breathing but was lethargic. The animal was tended to at the scene then taken to the Butler Veterinary Associates and Emergency Center on Route 8.

The cat was still missing at 8 a.m.

Fire Marshall Larry Christie was called to investigate the fire. Schmidt said it appeared to be an electrical fire.

“The home is certainly salvable,” the chief said.

The American Red Cross was called to assist Kenaan, Schmidt said.

Firefighters from Butler Fire District 3, Mercer Road and Penn Township assisted as did Butler Ambulance.
