1 dies, 2 get hurt in 3-vehicle crash

PINE TWP, Mercer County — State police today said a three-vehicle crash Wednesday left an Ohio woman dead.

Darlene L. Wilson, 52, of Medina, Ohio, was killed in the crash, which took place about 4 p.m. on Route 208 about a quarter-mile west of Centertown Road.

According to a state police report issued about noon today, William Lee Mercer, 49, of Seaford, Del., entered Route 208 from a private driveway to drive west in a Chevrolet C10. Randall Lee Smith, 60, of Grove City, in a Chevrolet Canyon, was coming up behind Mercer's vehicle, and steered into the eastbound lane of the road, hitting a Polaris Slingshot driven by Peter J. Nepodal, 69, of Medina, Ohio.

Wilson was a passenger in Nepodal's vehicle. She was taken to the Grove City Medical Center by ambulance, where she was pronounced dead.

Trooper Brett Stivason said that preliminary reports indicate that Smith steered into the eastbound lane to avoid hitting Mercer.

Stivason said the two vehicles that struck each other suffered heavy damage.

Nepodal was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown with “major injuries.” Smith suffered minor injuries, according to Stivason.

The trooper said the road was closed for several hours following the crash.
