Gas protest snubbed

What do you suppose drove the Butler Eagle’s decision not to cover Saturday’s march and rally against fracking near Butler County schools? (There was nothing in the newspaper — only three photographs on the newspaper’s Facebook page.)

More than 100 demonstrators marched downtown from the middle school to Diamond Park, where they displayed detailed information about the county schools in which kids’ and teachers’ health and safety are being put at extreme risk by the intentional presence near schools (within both health-danger and evacuation zones) of shale-gas infrastructure, including drilling sites, compressor stations, pipelines, processing plants, and silica-sand transfer points.

The program hosted several speakers who presented scientific evidence of the health- and safety-related dangers associated with living, working and playing near the industrial infrastructure that Big Gas keeps installing in ever closer proximity to vulnerable populations.

The rally event was publicized in advance and was covered by a Pittsburgh TV station.

The event was right across the street from the Eagle’s offices, so maybe the Eagle chose to ignore it because of a cozy relationship with Big Gas.
