Burglary suspect caught

He's arrested on unrelated charge

BUTLER TWP — A man wanted on an arrest warrant for allegedly burglarizing a Whitestown Village home last month is in the Allegheny County Jail following his weekend arrest on an unrelated charge in Pittsburgh.

Witt A. Yost Jr., 25, who has no known address, was nabbed by Pittsburgh police Saturday on a misdemeanor theft charge. He is jailed on $2,500 bail.

Butler Township police had been looking for the defendant since Thursday when they obtained a warrant for his arrest in connection with a burglary investigation.

Yost in that case is accused of breaking into an acquaintance’s home at the Whitestown Village apartment complex Aug. 14.

The alleged victim, Richard Schmeider, earlier that day allowed Yost to drive his car on the condition that the defendant later picked him up from work, police said.

The owner gave Yost the key to the car. On the same key ring was the key to Schmeider’s apartment.

Police suspect Yost later went to the victim’s apartment and helped himself to one 55-inch flat-screen television and another 47-inch TV, according to court documents. He also allegedly took about $1,000 worth of jewelry.

The defendant later that day sold some of the stolen items at a Butler jewelry store, according to a police affidavit. Investigators subsequently recovered those jewelry items as well as the car. Police charged Yost with burglary and theft by unlawful taking, both felonies, and receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of an automobile and theft by deception, all misdemeanors.

Butler police, meanwhile, have their own pending case against the same suspect.

He is accused of stealing a child’s electronic tablet in July from a former girlfriend’s home in the 300 block of East Locust Street.

City police Aug. 10 charged him with misdemeanor theft and receiving stolen property.
