Man dies in ATV accident

CONNOQUENESSING TWP — A 58-year-old township man was killed Saturday when the four-wheel all-terrain vehicle he was riding flipped and landed on top of him on a dirt road off Woodlands Road in Connoquenessing Township.

William S. Kirmeyer Jr., had left his nearby home about 3 p.m. to go riding on Bobcat Drive, an unfinished road primarily used by ATV riders, authorities said.

“He was going around a bend and lost control,” said Butler County Chief Deputy Coroner John Hanovick. “He flipped the (ATV) and it landed on his chest. “He likely died on impact.”

Hanovick pronounced the man dead at 6:52 p.m. of massive chest injuries.

No autopsy was conducted. Results of routine toxicology tests are pending.

State police investigators said they did not know the time the accident happened. Another ATV rider came upon the crash scene just after 6 p.m. and notified authorities

“It’s fortunate another rider happened by the accident,” Hanovick said. “If not for that, I don’t know how long it would have taken to find (the body).”

The Connoquenessing Township Volunteer Fire Department was called to assist police.

Rescuers had to use a four-wheeled utility vehicle to reach the body, about three-tenths of a mile off Woodlands Road. A Stokes basket was used to remove the body.
