Cuba stands to lose

The American flag is flying once again over an embassy in Cuba. For more than 50 years we have shunned our neighbor because it is a communist regime while we trade with China and Vietnam.

This is American hypocrisy taken too far. We operate our American gulag in Cuba. I heard we owe them lease payments — and they do want Guantanamo back.

They had a revolution. So did we.

Cuba had been taken over by American mobsters, according to some historians. It was a playground for the rich and famous, including a lot of American politicians. It had a brutal dictator, Batista, but he was our dictator. The Cuban people did not have a good life under his rule.

In his speech at the flag-raising ceremony, Secretary of State John Kerry called for democracy in Cuba. How about democracy in Saudi Arabia, an ally we give millions to?

Women are allowed to drive cars in Cuba. They do not have to be accompanied by a male relative when they leave the house. Cuba does not lash people or lop off their heads.

I feel Cuba will be sorry when we return. They will have problems with drugs, fast food and gun violence.
