Couple remembers son in wedding on diamond

Adam and Jamie Herman exchange vows Friday during their wedding ceremony at the Center Township Athletic Association baseball field that's named in honor of their late son, Nick.

CENTER TWP — Adam and Jamie Herman always knew that when they got married their son Nick would be an important part of the ceremony.

Nick was in the thoughts of the bridal party and their guests Friday afternoon when the couple tied the knot at a location that carries special meaning for the family — a youth baseball diamond.

Nick died on Feb. 3, 2014, at age 6 from a medical condition. During his life he loved sports, including watching the Philadelphia Eagles and playing T-ball.

“He's our best man today,” Jamie Herman said before the ceremony.

The board of the Center Township Athletic Association voted to name one of the diamonds behind Center Township Elementary in Nick's honor. It was dedicated on May 3, 2014.

The couple, who have been together for 13 years, had a second child named Matthew Nicholas 3 months ago.

After getting engaged last November, they had the idea to have their wedding ceremony at the field, Adam said.

“We said 'it needs to be on Nick's field so he can be a part of it,'” he said.

“The people who are here, they know how much Nick means to us, so I don't think anybody was surprised when they found out.”

The ceremony featured several reminders of Nick including his picture on an easel where the best man traditionally stands and a figurine of DeSean Jackson nearby, Nick's favorite football player.

Jamie Herman had a baseball patch with Nick's name on it sewn into her gown and during the ceremony the bride and groom had a “playful” moment when they walked out to the pitcher's mound while the guests blew bubbles.

Volunteers with the athletic association and Nick's preschool teacher, Tammi Delano, pitched in to make sure the field had fresh lines and was ready for the wedding.

The athletic association thought the wedding was a great idea, president Terry Chapla said.

“There would be no better way to do a tribute to Nick,” Chapla said. Nick also lends his name to one of the T-ball teams that his parents help sponsor: Nick's Tornado Speed.

Before the ceremony began, groomsman Kelly Huffman observed that the weather was perfect.“Nick's not going to let it rain,” he said.
