Tank fire closes exchange at I-80

BARKEYVILLE, Venango County — At least five Butler County fire companies were at the site of a tank explosion near Interstate 80 this morning.

According to the Butler County 911 center, firefighters from Harrisville, Marion Township, Slippery Rock, Unionville and West Sunbury were called to the explosion and fire at a Heath Oil refinery, which is located on Route 8 just south of the I-80 interchange.

The fire was reported at about 8 a.m. No injuries were reported.

An employee at a nearby business reported hearing a “metal ripping” sound and seeing a cap pop off the tank before the flames began. He said that it appeared that the smoke was diminished at about 8:35 a.m.

The tank was one of several on the company’s property. Officials on scene did not know what caused the explosion or what was in the tank.

As of 9:20 a.m., the Venango County 911 center reported that the fire was still burning and emergency crews were calling for more tanker trucks to fight it.

Initially, it was reported that the fire appeared to be out, but 911 later reported that it likely reignited.

The I-80 interchange at Route 8 was shut down, and Route 8 near the fire was shut down as well.
