Web update Missing fisherman's body recovered from pond

TOBY TWP, Clarion County — The body of a missing fisherman was recovered from a pond this morning, authorities said.

Divers, aided by a search dog, about 10 a.m. found the body of 22-year-old Aaron J. Kriebel of Toby Township in the mine pond on Henry Road near Rimersburg.

Kriebel was fishing with a friend on private property in the area referred to as “the cliffs” about 6 p.m. Monday when he turned up missing, according to investigators.

Clarion County Coroner Terry Shaffer pronounced Kriebel dead at the scene. An autopsy was planned at 4 p.m.

Shaffer said drowning is the suspected cause of death. State police are continuing their investigation.

It was not immediately known when Kriebel and his friend began fishing Monday. But at some point, his buddy left for a brief time.

“When (the friend) returned,” Shaffer said, “he saw (Kriebel’s) hat floating in the water.”

Divers and volunteer firefighters combed the pond for about three hours Monday night before the search was suspended due to darkness.

The Butler County Water Rescue Team helped in the search.

Crews, including Rimersburg and Sligo firefighters, returned shortly after 8 a.m. today.

A cadaver dog led rescuers on a boat to a portion of the pond where Kriebel’s body was eventually pulled from the water, Shaffer said.

Kriebel worked for a lawn and garden wholesaler near the Clarion-Butler County line, authorities said.
