Butler athletic HOF adding 6

Induction ceremony slated for Sept. 18

BUTLER TWP — Five athletes and a coach have been selected for induction into the Butler Area School District Athletic Hall of Fame.

Track and field coach Mike Seybert will join gymnasts Mickey Haley and Cliff Diehl, football player Donnie Brown, wrestler T.J. McCance and cross country runner Howard Hammonds at the induction ceremony Sept. 18.

The formal induction and reception will take place at 5 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The inductees will be presented on the Art Bernardi Stadium field at 7 p.m., prior to the Golden Tornado football game against North Hills that evening.

These six mark the Hall's sixth induction class and will swell the HOF's membership to 48.

Here is a synopsis of this year's inductees:

Donnie BrownA 1969 Butler graduate, Brown was a first team all-section football player for Coach Bernardi. He went on to play football at Wake Forest University.Obtaining his masters degree from St. Louis University in 1980, Brown served as strength coach for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1975-85.He was a fullback-linebacker for Butler.

Cliff DiehlA 1965 Butler graduate and outstanding gymnast, Diehl became a two-time WPIAL and state champion on the parallel bars. He also won WPIAL and state titles on the horizontal bars and won both titles in all around.Moving on to Michigan State University, Diehl placed second in the Big 10 on the parallel bars and qualified for the NCAA Championships in 1968.He was inducted into the Butler Area (now Butler County) Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.

Mickey HaleyA 1969 Butler graduate, Haley was a three-year letterman in gymnastics and diving with the Golden Tornado.He won the state title in the long horse vault his senior year. Haley placed third at the state diving meet that same season.Haley went on to coach numerous Butler High School divers, including Olympian David Pichler.

Howard HammondsA 1962 Butler graduate, Hammonds ran cross country for the Golden Tornado in 1961 — the first year the team was formed — and won the WPIAL and PIAA championship.Also competing in track and field, Hammonds won the WPIAL title in the mile run — setting the school record — and placed third in the state. He went on to an undefeated season in dual meets at Slippery Rock University.Hammonds went on to success as a collegiate track and cross country coach at SUNY-Plattsburgh.

T.J. McCanceA 2002 Butler graduate, McCance became the first Golden Tornado wrestler to reach 100 wins. His prep career record was 103-20.McCance won 10 individual tournament championships, was a four-year letterman, the team's outstanding wrestler for two years, a two-time section champion, four-time WPIAL qualifier and a state tournament qualifier.He also became the first Butler wrestler to compete at the NCAA Division I level when he went to Clarion University.

Mike SeybertA 1980 Butler graduate, Seybert went on to coach 30 athletes to WPIAL track and field titles in individual events, including 10 relay titles.From 1990 through 2003, Seybert posted a record of 172-14 as the Golden Tornado head boys and girls track coach. His teams won six WPIAL and 10 section titles and was WPIAL runner up six times.Seybert has also run 10 marathons, posting a personal-best time of two hours, 37.31 minutes.
