Suspect, 24, charged in domestic dispute

Police say death threats made

SUMMIT TWP — A Butler area man is accused of attacking his girlfriend’s father and threatening to kill both of them during a domestic dispute early Sunday morning at the family’s home on Moran Road, authorities said.

State police later arrested 24-year-old Maxwell J. Bowers on eight charges in the case. He is in the Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.

Police suspect Bowers accosted his girlfriend’s father, Gregory Young, at Young’s home shortly after midnight.

Bowers’ girlfriend, Ashley Young, and the couple’s 3-month-old daughter also live there, according to court documents.

Gregory Young told investigators that Bowers “choked him almost to the point of blacking out,” a police affidavit said.

Bowers also allegedly stole Ashley Young’s Apple iPhone and cover valued at a combined $600. He fled before troopers got there.

Police searched the area but could not find him.

About an hour later, police were called back after Bowers returned and kicked in a bedroom door where his infant daughter was sleeping, police said.

Bowers again assaulted Gregory Young during the second altercation. He fled again but later called his girlfriend by cell phone.

“During the conversation,” the police affidavit said, “Maxwell stated, ‘I’m coming for the baby and if you dad gets in the way, I’m going to slit his throat, and then I’ll slit yours, too.”

District Judge Sue Haggerty on Monday night arraigned Bowers on a felony count of terroristic threats and misdemeanor charges of simple assault, reckless endangerment, theft, receiving stolen property and disorderly conduct.

He also faces summary charges of harassment and criminal mischief.
