Jailed man faces charges for Megan's Law violation

He allegedly failed to register

A 36-year-old man was arraigned Monday on charges he failed to comply with requirements of being a sex offender after he turned up missing from a Butler home.

The suspect, Todd C. Chevalier, who has no known address, has been in Butler County Prison since July 23 on a probation violation.

Butler police began their criminal investigation after county probation officers last month could not find the defendant at his home on Hilltop Avenue, according to court documents.

Under state law, court-deemed sexual offenders must register personal information with state police.

That mandated disclosure includes an offender’s home address, employment information and vehicle registration.

Authorities later found Chevalier moving furniture into a home on Baumgart Lane in Oakland Township. He was arrested for violating the terms of his probation.

Police on Friday charged him with two counts of failing to comply with registration requirements, a felony, under Megan’s Law. He was arraigned on the charges Monday and remanded to prison on $50,000 bail.

Chevalier was registered under Megan’s Law on Dec. 19 after he pleaded guilty to indecent assault, a misdemeanor, involving a young girl in Middlesex Township between 2010 and 2012, court records showed.

He was sentenced to 4 to 12 months in county prison followed by one year on probation.

The defendant also was designated a Tier 1 sex offender, the lowest classification, meaning he is required to verify his address and other information with state police annually for 15 years.
