Fire destroys wooden garage

Motorcycle, 2 cars damaged

WASHINGTON TWP — No one was injured Wednesday afternoon in a fire that destroyed a wooden garage on Oneida Valley Road.

The garage was fully involved when the firefighters arrived shortly after 4 p.m., North Washington Fire Chief Nick Grove said.

The structure was a total loss and a motorcycle inside and two cars nearby also were burned. The house on the property and other structures were not damaged, and the residents were not forced to leave.

Responders spent about two hours at the scene.

In addition to fighting the fire, the firefighters had to deal with an air temperature of about 90 degrees.

Numerous companies were dispatched to provide additional manpower and allow the volunteers to rotate out before feeling the ill effects of the heat, Grove said.

The Bruin Volunteer Fire Department set up a relief station. They provided firefighters with ice, cold drinks and checked their blood pressure and pulse rates to make sure they weren’t experiencing heat exhaustion or other issues.

“A guy works for any amount of time he feels he can,” Grove said about ensuring that the firefighters were safe.

“In this extreme heat, 15, 20 minutes and they’re done, they sit down for half an hour to an hour,” he said.

Fire departments that responded were North Washington, West Sunbury, Eau Claire, Bruin, Chicora and Petrolia.

A state fire marshal was on the way Wednesday night to investigate the cause of the fire, though it did not appear to be suspicious, Grove said.
