Mars II earns close win

Mars II tallied three runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Cranberry Township 6-5 in the second game of a best-of-5 Eagle County League semifinal series Tuesday at North Boundary Park.

Darren Blakley hit a two-run single to tie the game before John Crummy’s sacrifice fly scored the decisive run.

The win gives Mars II a two-games-to-none lead in the series.

Cranberry scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth frame and entered the seventh with a 5-3 edge.

It was unable to manage any semblance of a rally in the bottom of the seventh as Mars II reliever Evan Oswald struck out three straight batters to end the game.

Blakley finished with a single, double, four runs batted in and a run scored. Brian Laurito singled and scored a run for Mars II (21-6-1).

Dave Coradi and John Davis both had a triple, run scored and one RBI for Cranberry (19-11-1).

Reed Tomlinson added a double and two runs batted in.

Mars II will look to wrap up the series at 6 p.m. today at Callery Field.
