Police fire Taser 3 times to stop man

Butler police on Sunday found themselves in a doughnut shop facing an angry man armed with a coat rack, according to court documents.

Before Michael L. Ehrman, 55, of Butler was eventually arrested, officers had to Taser him three times, police said.

Ehrman is charged with aggravated assault, a felony. He also faces charges of resisting arrest and criminal mischief.

Police were called to the Donut Connection on Center Avenue about 4:15 p.m. for an unruly man reportedly “threatening people and breaking things,” documents said.

Two officers got there and spotted the defendant swinging a wooden coat rack “like a baseball bat,” police said.

The officers ordered Ehrman to drop the rack and back off. He refused, police said, and instead swung the rack at the officers.

Patrolman Nathan Shulik deployed his Taser but Ehrman kept coming toward the officers. Sgt. Ronald Fundark fired his own Taser, hitting the suspect a second time, documents said. Still, he was not stopped.

Shulik again used his Taser. The defendant dropped the coat rack and was finally arrested.

Later, police said, Ehrman was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

No injuries were reported in the altercation. The only listed damage was an estimated $75 to the coat rack.
