Man pleads guilty

He admits having sex with 15-year-old

A Cranberry Township man on Monday pleaded guilty to statutory sexual assault.

The crime, which will likely net 21-year-old Joseph Butler up to 30 months in prison, allegedly began about seven months after the defendant was released from prison for assaulting a different teenage girl.

Under the terms of his plea agreement, Butler on Monday acknowledged he had sex with a 15-year-old girl 50 times between Oct. 2013 and June 2014.

In addition to statutory sexual assault, he pleaded guilty to a felony count of corruption of minors.

Butler, who already has been in the prison 13 months on these charges, later will face a sentence of 12 to 30 months followed by an undetermined amount of probation when he is sentenced.

A sentencing date will be set after the defendant is evaluated by a member of the state’s sexual offender assessment board.

Butler still could face further punishment because he was on probation from his first statutory assault conviction.

Court records say Butler in March 28, 2013, pleaded guilty to statutory sexual assault.

At that time he was sentenced by the same judge to serve 6 to 12 months in jail. Butler, who already had credit for 116 days he spent in jail awaiting resolution of that case, was placed on parole followed by 5 years on probation.

Court records indicate the victim in that case, a 14-year-old girl, is different than the victim in the new case.
