Greinke’s shutout streak ends

NEW YORK — Zack Greinke’s shutout streak for the Los Angeles Dodgers ended Sunday after the New York Mets scored against him on a grounder by opposing pitcher Jacob deGrom.

Greinke retired his first six batters in the Mets’ 3-2 win in 10 innings, extending his scoreless streak to 45 2/3 innings — longest in the majors since Orel Hershiser set the big league record with 59 for the Dodgers in 1988.

It was the first run Greinke had allowed in seven starts since June 13 at San Diego. He did give up a leadoff homer to AL MVP Mike Trout in the All-Star Game on July 14.

Toronto prepares for Olympic bid

TORONTO — The head of the Canadian Olympic Committee said Sunday he would push Toronto to bid for the 2024 Olympics.

Marcel Aubut, head of the COC, told a press conference he wants to see Canada’s largest city be an official candidate by Sept. 15, the deadline set by the International Olympic Committee.

“It’s time to make it crystal clear,” Aubut said. “I am officially declaring that I will use the full power of my office to lead and advocate for Toronto’s candidacy to hold the 2024 Olympic Games. This is it.”

So far five cities are already bidding: Boston; Budapest, Hungary; Hamburg, Germany; Paris; Rome. Toronto lost recent bids to Atlanta for the 1996 Olympics, and to Beijing for 2008.
