Spangler sets save record

SV grad closes win Sunday for 17th save

A wild win Sunday helped Zach Spangler make history and the Butler BlueSox earn a weekend split with a 3-1 win over the Jamestown Jammers Sunday at Dietrhick Park in Prospect League East Division action.

Spangler — who blew his second save in a 3-2 loss to West Virginia Saturday at Kelly Automotive Park — slammed the door against Jamestown.

The Seneca Valley High School graduate didn’t allow any baserunners to seal the win and set the Prospect League record for saves in a season with 17.

That record was previously held by Chase Byerly, who pitched for the Slippery Rock Sliders in 2011.

The second-place BlueSox (26-23 overall, 13-9 second half) are 3.5 games behind the first-place Chillicothe Paints in the Prospect League’s East Division second-half race. Chillicothe (30-18, 15-5) has won four straight.

Against the Jammers, the BlueSox started the ninth inning down 1-0. Jamie Switalski started the rally by opening with a single off reliever Paxton De La Garza.

He moved to second when Allan Hooker reached on an error. Michael Patrick moved both up with a sacrifice bunt.

One batter late, Jared Grove singled and advanced to second on an error, scoring Switalski and Hooker to put Butler up 2-1.

After Tyler Sullivan walked, Dan Hrbek drove in Grove with a single.

Matt Gordon earned the win for Butler against Jamestown, striking out three batters in eight innings of work.

Spangler took the loss against West Virginia, allowing two runs to score in the ninth.

Hrbek and Cam Balego drove in the BlueSox’s runs in the third inning to put Butler up 2-1.

Butler will host Chillicothe Tuesday night and has 11 games remaining.
