'Shootout' leaves 1 youth dead
ERIE — One teenager was killed and five other youths wounded in what police described as a “shootout” on an Erie street, authorities said Saturday.
The violence apparently erupted just before midnight Friday, police said.
“Right now we are still trying to put together all the pieces of what happened,” Chief Randy Bowers said. “It was a chaotic scene. We are still working to separate witnesses from suspects from victims.”
Police said many teenagers were in the area, where Bowers said investigators were told a resident of a nearby apartment was holding an “eviction party.”
Deputy Coroner Korac Timon said 16-year-old Elijah Jackson of Erie died of a single gunshot wound to the head just after 1 a.m. Saturday. Another youth was in critical condition.
“There were people leaning on my fence and sitting on my porch,” Danielle Heitzenrater said. “I called 911. ... Then I heard shots.”
