Infant hurt in ATV crash

3 children, adult riding on ATV

MARION TWP — A 10-month old girl was hurt Saturday night when the all-terrain vehicle she was aboard crashed, authorities said.

The infant and two other children, including an 18-month-old boy, were all reportedly on a four-wheeler driven by a 27-year-old woman in the 200 block of Allison Road.

The infant was taken by ambulance to Grove City Medical Center before being flown by medical helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The child’s injuries were not believed to be serious, authorities said. An initial diagnosis was the girl suffered a hematoma to the head.

State police are investigating the accident but a report was not available this morning.

The woman was driving the ATV on the side of her yard when she wrecked about 8:30 p.m., emergency responders said. The relationship between the woman and children was not immediately known.

“It wasn’t a violent crash,” said Chief Joe Fitzgerald of the Marion Township Volunteer Fire Company. “It happened on a hillside where there’s a dip in the yard.”

Authorities said the grass was dewy and it was just turning dark when the accident occurred.

Rescuers initially believed all three children were hurt. But the toddler and a 4-year-old girl apparently escaped injury.

Firefighters and paramedics were primarily worried about the condition of the 10-month old.

“We were concerned because of the age of the child,” Fitzgerald said. “The (infant) was crying but moving and (she) was conscious the whole time.”

A Superior Ambulance crew tended to the infant before she was taken to the hospital. The woman rode with the infant in the same ambulance, authorities said.
