Build the elevator

Regarding “City won’t add elevator to garage” (July 22, Page 1).

The city is pointing to budget issues concerning the elevator. I fully understand these concerns.

However, if an elevator can be built for $275,000, then by all means it needs to be built.

Butler has an aging population. It is also an increasingly disabled population. The number of people in the area who are using wheelchairs, walkers, carts and canes is somewhat alarming to me.

I too am in a wheelchair and I appreciate all that is being done to help the disabled to travel and shop on our Main Street business section.

In my view, it is simply not an option to not have the elevator in that building. Think about having to park on an upper deck and then having to negotiate the internal ramps to get down to the street level.

This has the potential to be quite dangerous.

Once again, I appreciate the city’s efforts to help those of us who have difficulties walking. I ask that the city please reconsider building the elevator. It is essential that we have that in that building and it will complete the building, making it into a jewel for the city.
