Not gonna happen

I wonder if Gov. Tom Wolf really believes we are naive or stupid enough to even think that our school property taxes will decrease if he gets a severance tax on the Marcellus gas.

Remember, we were told the casinos were to do the same thing.

I do not for one minute believe him. I absolutely do not want the gas money going to the Harrisburg politicians and bureaucrats — if they get $1 they will find a way to spend at least $3.

I personally believe our local officials do far more good for the individual communities with the Marcellus gas money as it is now divided, through impact fees, than Harrisburg ever will.

If the municipalities would get at least 55 percent of any severance tax, then maybe I could agree with it. However, what has Harrisburg done with all the additional gasoline taxes we are now paying as well as the additional costs for car licenses, driver licenses and the many other additional costs and/or fees that were to be used for roads and bridges?

I would guess, but have not personally seen, the state roads in the eastern part of the state are in much better condition than what we have here. Granted, they did some work on state Route 228, but that is the only one — and I do not think it was an exceptionally fine job.

With what they have to work with, our little Middlesex Township does a much better job on our roads than the state does with the state highways. Which takes me back to my original thoughts: that the Marcellus gas money should stay within the area from which the gas is obtained.
