No ruling made on Brady appeal

While Tom Brady and the New England Patriots await the outcome of an appeal of his four-game suspension following Deflategate, the man making the decision, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, was in Canonsburg to speak at a fundraiser for the Washington YWCA.

Goodell spoke with the media before the luncheon and said the process of determining the ruling on Brady’s appeal is ongoing.

“We’re focused on it, we’re obviously being very thorough, want to make sure we’ve considered all aspects of his appeal, and we’ll make a decision as quickly as possible,” Goodell said.

Goodell said he has no specific timeline for when he will reach a decision.

“We want to make sure we have a fair and open process and make sure we’ve considered everything,” he said.

Goodell could decide to uphold, reduce or overturn Brady’s suspension, which the league imposed for the quarterback’s role in the use of deflated footballs in the AFC championship against Indianapolis on Jan. 18.

Goodell also briefly addressed the Steelers exploring a possible bid to host the 2023 Super Bowl.

“I know (Steelers President Art Rooney II) is interested in pursuing that and that’s one of the things that he’s put his focus on, and he’s evaluating that,” Goodell said. “The decision’s made by the ownership and at some point in time we’ll address it.”

Rooney previously told the Post-Gazette that the Steelers have not determined that they will make a bid to host the Super Bowl, just that they are interested in “throwing (their) hat in the ring and exploring it.”

Goodell also did not have a timeline for ruling on an appeal of Le’Veon Bell’s three-game suspension for marijuana and a DUI conviction.
