Boys left in car; mom arrested

NEW SEWICKLEY TWP, Beaver County — A Butler County mother is accused of leaving her two young children — one just 5 months old — unattended in a hot car Sunday night while she drank inside a township bar, authorities said.

Cielo E. Torrez, 29, of Butler Township admitted she downed two beers and a shot during the time her children were left in the locked car with the windows rolled up, according to New Sewickley Township police.

But what particularly stunned police was Torrez’s reaction when officers found her in Rumors Bar & Grill on Rochester Road near the Butler County line.

“She stated that she didn’t think there was a problem in what she was doing,” said police Chief Ronald Leindecker.

Soon after, officers arrested Torrez on child endangerment and other charges. She is being held in the Beaver County Jail on $2,500 bail.

About 9 p.m., police said they got a report of a small child and an infant in a car. When police arrived, they found the children, both boys, in the vehicle at the bar parking lot. The infant was in a child safety seat.

“The 5 month old was sweating profusely and his hair was stuck to his forehead, according to the officers,” Leindecker said.

Police did not know the temperature inside the car, but Leindecker said that night was warm and humid.

An Economy Ambulance crew was called and examined the boys. Both appeared to be in good health, authorities said.

Officers eventually found Torrez, a single mother, who was in the bar alone, drinking.

“She stated that she was in there an estimated 15 to 20 minutes,” Leindecker said.

Police believe the defendant was in the area because her boyfriend lives in New Sewickley.

The boys’ grandmother, who lives with Torrez, her daughter, later took custody of the boys.

The defendant is charged with two counts each of child endangerment and reckless endangerment, as well as public drunkenness.
