Trio facing felony drug charges

They are accused of having heroin

A van containing nearly 150 bags of suspected heroin landed three people in the Butler County Prison.

Charged with felony drug possession in last week’s arrest in Butler are Elmer C. Scherder Jr., 48, of Butler; Scott I. Bowra, 39, of Braddock, Allegheny County; and Divita N. Williams, 29, of Pittsburgh.

An anonymous call reporting a man and woman shooting up heroin in a red conversion van about 10:15 p.m. Friday sent Butler police to the 300 block of South Chestnut Street where they found the defendants.

Scherder and Bowra were standing outside the van. Williams was in the front passenger seat. Patrolman David Cook spoke to the suspects, who gave conflicting accounts of what they were doing there, according to court documents.

Cook in charging papers noted the trio were in a known drug area.

Police looked through the vehicle windows and got an eye full. Cook said officers could see what appeared to be drug contraband, including bundles of stamp bags of suspected heroin, as well as currency.

A search of the van turned up 147 bags of suspected heroin, drug packaging materials and other purported evidence.

Police arrested all three suspects. District Judge Sue Haggerty on Saturday arraigned each on felony charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and conspiracy.

They also are charged with misdemeanor drug possession.

The defendants were placed in the Butler County Prison on $15,000 bail each following arraignment.
