England wins, 1-0 in 3rd-place game

EDMONTON, Alberta — Days after a gut-wrenching loss, England finished its deepest run in the Women’s World Cup with an uplifting victory. No last-minute heartbreak this time around. Just a solid all-around performance for Steph Houghton and company.

Houghton’s nifty legwork prevented an own goal and Fara Williams scored on a penalty kick in the 108th minute, leading England to a 1-0 victory over top-ranked Germany in the third-place game Saturday.

Confederate flag still flying at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Steven Rebenstorf has numerous flags flying atop his canopy tent inside Daytona International Speedway. The Confederate flag is front and center.

It’s been like that for years. And the 57-year-old Rebenstorf has no plans to take it down — not even if NASCAR decides to ban the embattled flag from its racetracks.

Rebenstorf and others staunchly defended their Confederate flags at NASCAR’s first race in the South since the racing series and its tracks urged fans to no longer wave the banner. Dozens were scattered throughout the vast infield all weekend leading to Sunday’s race.

Weather affecting Tour de France
