Suspected thief faces more charges

A suspected serial catalytic converter thief had more charges filed against him earlier this week stemming from thefts that occurred in April.

State police in Butler said Taylor M. Baldt, 27, of Mars stole converters from two vehicles parked at the Clearview Mall in Center Township and from three vehicles at the park and rides on routes 488 and 422 in Muddy Creek Township between April 3 and April 9.

Baldt was arrested in April by Ross Township Police in Allegheny County and charged with stealing numerous converters in the North Hills.

He also was charged by police in Butler and Penn townships in May for stealing converters in those municipalities.

A catalytic converter is an important part of the exhaust system that is found in front of the vehicle’s muffler. It reduces the amount of toxic chemicals released from the engine.

The converters are often stolen with a portable power saw and sold for scrap for $50 to $75 apiece.
